Storia
The Maremma project
Val delle Rose began in 1996, when the Cecchi family expanded its vineyard holdings by purchasing 25 hectares in the Tuscan Maremma. The acquisition initiated an ambitious agronomic and oenological project intended to explore the region’s potential and strengthen the expression of its native varieties.
A modern winery was subsequently constructed at Val delle Rose. It was conceived as the production centre for the new estate and designed to enhance the identity of the territory and its local grapes.
The project developed under the fourth generation of the Cecchi family, represented by Andrea Cecchi. This phase of the family’s history has focused on establishing estates in strongly identified winegrowing areas of Tuscany and Umbria while combining inherited experience with agronomic experimentation and sustainability. At Val delle Rose, the vineyard programme has encompassed Morellino di Scansano, Vermentino, Viognier, Ciliegiolo and international varieties.
Environmental development
Cecchi introduced wetland wastewater treatment during the 1990s and later replicated the system at Val delle Rose. The estate’s installation received the Toscana Ecoefficiente recognition.
In 2021, Val delle Rose completed the conversion of its vineyards to organic farming. The transition formed part of a broader programme aimed at reducing environmental impact, protecting natural resources and preserving agricultural landscapes.
Recent development
From the 2021 vintage, Merlot grown at Val delle Rose became one of the two components of the reformulated Coevo blend, paired with Sangiovese from Villa Rosa in Chianti Classico.
The estate’s more recent work in Maremma has also expanded the presentation of Mediterranean and international varieties. Caprifoglio offers a Maremma interpretation of Viognier, while Calipte reinterprets Sangiovese as a rosé. Lobelia subsequently brought together Trebbiano Toscano, Vermentino and Chardonnay in a fresh Tuscan white-wine project shaped by the coastal climate.
Terroir
Val delle Rose lies in the Tuscan Maremma, a coastal environment where the sea meets broad, wild hills and largely unspoiled landscapes. The area combines rich soils with a warm, bright Mediterranean climate.
Proximity to the sea is a defining influence. Constant maritime breezes moderate the sunny conditions, encourage even grape ripening and help preserve freshness and aromatic intensity. The interaction of intense light, mild winds and coastal freshness supports both local varieties and international grapes.
The Maremma project is particularly associated with Morellino di Scansano and Vermentino, while Viognier, Ciliegiolo, Merlot and other international varieties broaden the estate’s Mediterranean interpretation of Tuscany.
Vinificazione
The Val delle Rose vineyards completed their conversion to organic farming in 2021.
The estate forms part of a family programme focused on lowering environmental impact, conserving natural resources and protecting agricultural landscapes. Vineyard development is guided by close attention to the individual characteristics of grape varieties and vintages. The wider agronomic programme includes zoning, research into Sangiovese clones and continued agronomic development.
Coastal ventilation is an important natural influence in the vineyards. The regular sea breezes promote even ripening and help maintain grape freshness and aromatic intensity.
A modern winery was built after the Cecchi family acquired its first 25 hectares in Maremma in 1996. Its purpose is to enhance the character of the territory and its local grape varieties.
Environmental infrastructure includes a wetland system for treating winery wastewater. The installation follows the treatment model first introduced by Cecchi during the 1990s and earned Val delle Rose the Toscana Ecoefficiente recognition.
The production approach centres on interpreting the distinctive character of each variety and each vintage through work in both vineyard and cellar. No estate-wide specifications for grape reception, fermentation vessels, maceration, maturation, filtration or bottling are defined.
Filosofia
Val delle Rose was conceived to express the Tuscan Maremma through its local varieties while exploring the suitability of selected international grapes in a Mediterranean setting. The estate’s stated direction joins territorial identity with agronomic and oenological research.
Within the Cecchi family’s production philosophy, nature is treated as the starting point for decisions in both vineyard and cellar. The aim is to bring forward the individual character of each grape variety from one vintage to the next, with careful vineyard management, clone selection and attention to terroir.
Environmental responsibility is framed around reducing the impact of production, preserving natural resources and protecting agricultural landscapes. At Val delle Rose, this position is expressed through organic vineyard management and wetland wastewater treatment. The broader family approach also seeks a balance among inherited practice, experimentation and environmental, economic and social sustainability.
