Storia
More than a century in the Langhe
Prunotto has more than a century of winemaking history in the Langhe. Its historic winery is in Alba, between the Barolo and Barbaresco areas, while a second cellar operates at Bussia Soprana in Monforte d’Alba.
Antinori involvement
At an unspecified date, the Antinori family chose to invest in Prunotto, drawn by the Langhe landscape and the distinctive vineyards and soils surrounding the estate. This investment was conceived as a long-term engagement with the territory.
1961: the first Bussia vintage
The amphitheater-shaped Bussia vineyard produced the first vintage of Prunotto’s Barolo Bussia in 1961. Nebbiolo from Bussia and the neighboring Vigna Colonnello is now vinified in the Bussia cellar and aged in traditional large oak casks.
Terroir
Prunotto is based in Alba, on the right bank of the Tanaro River and approximately midway between Barbaresco and Barolo. The winery stands on a gently undulating plain surrounded by the vineyards of the Langhe and Roero.
The wider landscape is formed by rolling hills alternating with small descending valleys. Vineyard rows follow the contours of the slopes. The estate also operates in Bussia Soprana, a small village in the heart of the Barolo area, where the Bussia vineyard forms a natural amphitheater and lies alongside Vigna Colonnello.
Vinificazione
Prunotto maintains a historic winery in Alba and a vinification cellar at Bussia Soprana. The Bussia facility is dedicated to Nebbiolo harvested from Vigna Colonnello and the amphitheater-shaped Bussia vineyard. These grapes are vinified there, and the wines mature in traditional large oak casks.
Filosofia
The Antinori family’s approach to Prunotto is framed as a sustained engagement with the Langhe and its distinctive vineyards and soils. The project places the character of the territory at the center of continued investment, while the Bussia cellar preserves a traditional maturation approach based on large oak casks.
