Terroir
Abruzzo
Cool air descending from the Apennines meets sea breezes from the Adriatic, creating a distinctive microclimate. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot summers and snowy winters. Soil composition varies with the landscape: hills and mountain slopes have marly-clayey soils rich in sand and limestone, while the level coastal areas contain gravel and alluvial deposits.
The Sangiovese vineyards are located in Ortona and San Salvo on the Adriatic coast. Their south-eastern exposure and clay-limestone soils define the specific setting used by Riporta in Abruzzo.
Puglia
Puglia has a Mediterranean climate with long, hot summers. Breezes arriving from two seas continually cool the vineyards. The predominantly level landscape is characterised by brick-red soils whose iron oxides derive from the underlying limestone.
One group of Primitivo vineyards lies a short distance east of Taranto on the Salento Peninsula. Red clay soils and breezes from the Ionian Sea shape this site. Farther south, the Primitivo di Manduria vineyards stand between Sava and Manduria, where strong sunlight and proximity to the Ionian Sea are the principal environmental influences.
The Puglian setting associated with Zinfandel combines sandy and clay soils, bright sunlight and cool sea breezes. Vineyards form part of a broader agricultural landscape shared with olive trees and wheat fields.
Sicily
Sicily combines a dry climate, the warm Sirocco, cooling sea breezes and varied soil compositions. Together they create multiple microclimates for native varieties and conditions associated with the aromatic character of Mediterranean scrub.
Nero d’Avola is grown at 350 metres above sea level near Lake Arancio, on fresh soil containing limestone and clay. The lake helps maintain access to water and nutrients during periods of severe drought. Pinot Grigio comes from north-facing vineyards in the province of Agrigento, where the local microclimate supports aromatic development while preserving acidity.
Vinificazione
Riporta’s vineyards employ training systems adapted to their individual locations. Sangiovese in Ortona and San Salvo is trained on pergolas, while the Primitivo di Manduria sites between Sava and Manduria retain traditional alberello bush vines more than 30 years old. Primitivo’s naturally early ripening cycle permits harvest at the end of August.
The project presents vineyard work as a patient, multigenerational collaboration with natural conditions. Farmers adapt their work to the elements in each region, while the winemaking team maintains a close relationship with the grapes from vineyard arrival through their transformation in the cellar.
Filosofia
Riporta is conceived as a project that brings the character of Abruzzo, Puglia and Sicily into a single regional portfolio. Its stated identity rests on the passion of winegrowers and knowledge passed down over millennia.
The project attributes the harmony of its fruit to the patient work of farmers who have adapted to natural forces over generations. It also presents its winemakers as working in close symbiosis with the grapes arriving at the cellar, following them through their transformation into finished wine.
