History
Origins and the founding family
The Barale family’s winegrowing roots reach back to the period surrounding the foundation of the Kingdom of Italy, when Barolo was still a relatively new wine in the Langhe. Francesco Barale, Sergio Barale’s great-grandfather, was among its early producers. The estate identifies 1870 as the year of foundation; it was also the year in which Francesco’s son Carlo Barale was born.
In 1900, Carlo married Margherita Rinaldi. For approximately the next twenty years, he and his father-in-law managed Barale Rinaldi, described as one of the first cellars established in Barolo. During the opening years of the twentieth century, Carlo acquired the present manor house in the centre of Barolo and established the business that he later entrusted to his sons Giovanni Battista, Francesco and Giuseppe under the name Fratelli Barale.
The family’s heraldic mark accumulated numerous medals at international exhibitions around the turn of the twentieth century. The historic emblem and its medals subsequently became visual symbols of continuity between the early business and the modern estate.
Export recognition
In 1934, Fratelli Barale became one of the first Italian wineries authorized to use the national mark for the export of its wines. An original authorization document remains part of the family’s historical record.
Development of the vineyards
The estate gradually assembled holdings in Barolo, Monforte d’Alba and Neive, selecting sites for their suitability to particular varieties and the geological form of each hill. The Serraboella Nebbiolo vineyard in Neive was planted in 1969. In 1978, Castellero was planted with Nebbiolo propagated through mass selection of old local material, preserving Michet, Rosè and Lampia. Chardonnay was planted in Bussia in 1982, while the Bussia Soprana Nebbiolo parcel was planted in 1983.
Sergio Barale later pursued a selection based on long-term study of the estate’s best sites. Work in Bussia included experimental planting of the modern Nebbiolo clone CN142, intended to unite the site’s soil characteristics with the productive qualities of newer clonal material. Old Barbera vineyards on the white, lean soils of Preda and Bussia were reserved for low-yield, later-picked fruit. An almost-abandoned Pinot Nero vineyard at Castellero also inspired Sergio to develop a traditional-method sparkling wine from the estate.
Organic conversion and preservation of genetic material
The estate began conversion to organic farming in 2013. Its approach brought together spontaneous vegetation between the rows, manure from horses raised on the property, manual weed control and vineyard protection based exclusively on copper and sulphur. Mass selection remained central to the preservation of historic Nebbiolo material.
In 2014, Monrobiolo di Bussia was planted with Michet, Rosè and Lampia material selected from the old Castellero vines, extending this genetic continuity into a new vineyard.
The family today
Sergio Barale, Giuseppe’s son, inherited the family’s accumulated experience and now carries the estate forward with his daughters Eleonora and Gloria. The nineteenth-century manor house in Barolo remains the administrative and commercial headquarters. The adjacent historic underground cellars continue to accommodate vinification and maturation, combining traditional cellar practices with modern equipment.
Terroir
The estate’s approximately 13 hectares are distributed among hills in Barolo, Monforte d’Alba, Neive and, for Arneis, Castellinaldo. Sites were selected according to the needs of individual varieties and the geological morphology of their hills. Historic Barolo vineyards such as Castellero and Cannubi are associated with a more elegant, ethereal expression, while Bussia in Monforte d’Alba contributes greater structure.
The subsoil originated from a marine environment during the Miocene, and the estate regards the trace elements retained in these sediments as fundamental to the distinctions among individual hills.
Around Barolo, Sant’Agata fossil marls are recurrent. Castellero is calcareous with a silty-clay-loam texture, while the Monrobiolo di Bussia soils consist of silty-clay marls interspersed with brown-grey sandy banks. Preda and parts of Bussia are characterized as white, lean soils. In Bussia Soprana, calcareous Sant’Agata fossil marl has a sandy-loam component. The Bussia Chardonnay site combines fossil marl and calcareous silty-clay-loam soil.
At Serraboella in Neive, compact grey marl alternates with sand, producing a calcareous silty-sandy-loam soil. The Castelletto and Bussia Salicetti sites used for Dolcetto have yellow-red sand and sandstone alternating with grey silty marl. The estate’s vineyards span predominantly southern exposures—south-east, south, south-west and west—and documented elevations range from approximately 250 to 350 metres.
Winemaking
All vineyards are cultivated under a certified organic regime, with conversion initiated in 2013. The purpose is to protect native flora and fauna, preserve natural soil fertility and address the health of both the territory’s inhabitants and the consumer.
Spontaneous vegetation is maintained between the rows. Fertility is supported with natural manure from horses raised on the estate, while weeds are controlled manually. Vineyard protection is restricted to copper and sulphur. Several of these practices are described as consistent with biodynamic principles, particularly spontaneous ground cover and the use of manure generated within the farm.
Planting density varies by site and variety, generally between 3,500 and 4,500 vines/ha in the present holdings. Most red varieties and Arneis are trained to low Guyot; Chardonnay and Pinot Nero parcels also use spur-pruned cordon systems. Historic Nebbiolo material—especially Michet and Rosè, alongside Lampia—is conserved through mass selection. This approach preserved old material in Castellero and supplied the vines planted at Monrobiolo di Bussia in 2014.
Harvesting is manual, with careful selection of bunches. Picking dates range from the first part of September for early-ripening white varieties and Dolcetto to the first half or middle of October for Nebbiolo and late-picked Barbera. Site selection, low yields in selected Preda and Bussia parcels, and matching each variety to suitable exposures form the basis of the estate’s vineyard strategy.
The nineteenth-century manor house in central Barolo serves as the administrative and commercial headquarters. Beside it are the winemaking facilities and historic underground cellars used for maturation. Traditional production systems are integrated with modern cellar technology, while restrained handling and time remain the guiding principles.
Grapes are harvested by hand with bunch selection. Red-wine processing generally begins with gentle crushing and destemming. Fermentation is spontaneous or conducted with indigenous yeasts, in either oak vats or stainless-steel tanks according to the lot. Documented red-wine temperatures are commonly 25–27 °C. Maceration ranges from approximately one week to 15–30 days, with frequent, gentle wetting or pumping over of the skins.
Nebbiolo intended for extended maturation is aged in medium-sized French oak vessels, generally 15–30 hl, with only the necessary rackings. Documented maturation periods include two years for Serraboella and approximately 30 months for the estate’s principal Barolo lots, followed by at least 12 months in bottle. Selected wines are bottled without filtration or other pre-bottling treatment. The Bussia Riserva receives an additional three years in glass-lined concrete tanks and/or demijohns after its period in oak.
Barbera and Langhe Nebbiolo may mature in 500-litre tonneaux, while Dolcetto and some Nebbiolo lots use medium-sized oak. Depending on the selection, bottle maturation extends for approximately six to twelve months.
White-wine processing includes refrigeration or cold maceration, gentle pressing and static settling of the must. Clear juice ferments spontaneously in stainless steel at approximately 16–18 °C. The Bussia Chardonnay completes part of fermentation and a 12-month maturation in 500-litre tonneaux, with frequent bâtonnage. Arneis remains briefly in stainless steel with regular lees stirring before bottling.
For the traditional-method sparkling wine, Chardonnay and Pinot Nero are hand harvested and undergo gentle processing, cold maceration, pressing and static low-temperature settling. The must ferments spontaneously in stainless steel at 16–18 °C, followed by cold stabilization and lees stirring. Secondary fermentation begins in bottle after the addition of fresh Chardonnay must. Bottles mature in the underground cellar on their lees for at least 36 months, are riddled by hand on traditional pupitres and are finished with zero dosage.
Philosophy
The estate places respect for the territory, its inhabitants and consumer health at the centre of its work. Its declared objective is to preserve the vitality of the soil and the native flora and fauna while allowing individual vineyards and varieties to retain their identity.
Barolo is treated as a wine that should not be constrained by fashion. Its character is understood as an unmediated expression of Nebbiolo and place, with nuances that change from hill to hill. This position underlies the selection of vineyard sites, the conservation of old Nebbiolo material and the preference for restrained cellar handling.
Several farming choices are inspired by the biodynamic concept of the agricultural estate as a self-contained organism. Spontaneous ground cover and manure from horses raised within the property exemplify this approach, although the estate identifies its formal farming regime as certified organic rather than biodynamic.
In the cellar, traditional systems and modern technology are combined to produce balanced wines led by grape variety and origin. Gentle handling, long maturation and minimal rackings are intended to protect the quality obtained in the vineyard. Sergio Barale’s vineyard research, the preservation of Michet and Rosè through mass selection, and the recovery of an old Pinot Nero parcel reflect a philosophy that joins historical continuity with selective experimentation.
