History
The family history is presented through a sequence of milestones beginning with the grandparents’ agricultural work and the first small production for family use and local sale.
Ernesto Grasso became the custodian of the family’s vineyard knowledge and established the long connection with Vallegrande. In 1965 he vinified the home vineyard separately.
Giulio Grasso and Luciana developed the modern estate and expanded the vineyard holdings. The family later added white varieties, including the first Rhine Riesling vineyard.
Today Giulio and Luciana work with their daughters Paola, Valentina and Federica. The three daughters lead production, hospitality and commercial activities while continuing the family’s cru-based Barbaresco project.
The first Vallegrande Riserva Viti Vecchie was produced from the 2018 vintage. The Pora project began with the 2004 vintage and is produced in approximately 800 bottles per year.
Terroir
The estate owns 31 ha in Barbaresco, Treiso and Trezzo Tinella. The Barbaresco crus include Asili, Pora, Vallegrande, Marcarini and Trestelle. Ferrere in Treiso includes a calcareous, sandy site planted to Rhine Riesling. The estate treats each cru as a distinct combination of soil, exposure and microclimate.
Winemaking
The family developed its own sustainability model from long experience and detailed vineyard knowledge. Vineyard work is adapted to individual crus and varieties. The estate states that all wines are produced from a single grape variety.
The winery prefers native yeasts in fermentation so that individual wines can express their origin. Sulphur dioxide is limited to the minimum considered necessary for correct aging. Individual cru wines are vinified separately. Depending on the wine, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled steel or wooden vats, followed by maturation in oak and bottle.
Philosophy
The estate seeks to prioritise the most authentic qualities of each wine. Its philosophy combines detailed cru knowledge, sustainable production, native fermentation and family continuity.
