Valle d'Aosta
Detto anche Aosta Valley
28 cantine, 45 vini e 1 denominazione. Valle d'Aosta is Italy's smallest and least populous region, a single deep Alpine valley in the far north-west bordering France and French-speaking Switzerland, and it often uses French names as readily as Italian ones. Most of it is too mountainous to farm, and its vineyards are squeezed onto terraces along the Dora Baltea, some of them among the highest in Europe. Continua a leggere ↓

Valle d'Aosta in breve
Not surprisingly it makes by far the least wine of any Italian region: under 19,000 hectolitres in 2022 from just 450 hectares. More than 60 per cent of it is red. The grapes are a mix of natives and imports: Petit Rouge leads with 20 per cent of the vineyards, followed by Nebbiolo at 12, Pinot Nero and Prié Blanc at 8 each, and Fumin at 7. Prié Blanc grows up to about 1,200 metres at Morgex and La Salle, on vines so high that many were never grafted against phylloxera.
The whole region is covered by a single DOC, Valle d'Aosta or Vallée d'Aoste, with subzones such as Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle, Enfer d'Arvier, Torrette and Donnas. There is no DOCG and no IGP.
